Quintessential Hills of the British Isles

Welcome to the Worthies: a collective name for the mountains, hills and coastlines that best convey the essence of Britain and Ireland’s distinctive landscapes.

Many hill lists already exist, most defined by statistical classifications based on elevation, prominence, or other measurements. Such catalogues inevitably become peak-bagging objectives. The Worthies is something different. It is not a checklist, although to visit every Worthy featured here would undoubtedly enrich the soul.

Each Worthy is an exemplar, not selected for height or status, but for its individual qualities and its ability to embody the spirit of its surroundings.

This website serves as a companion, conveying the fundamental character of each chosen ambassador through individual eulogies: reflections on atmosphere, landscape, history, and sense of place.

The Destinations menu above provides access to features organised by region and topic. Practical route information can readily be found elsewhere and is therefore only touched upon here. Our purpose is not to describe how to climb a hill, but to illustrate why you should climb it…
